JULIET KIRKHAM

I am a self-taught artist, working out of my studio in Berkeley, California.  I have always been drawn to watercolor, but learning to use this mercurial and mischievous medium is a recent exploration.  I am constantly thrilled with the interplay between water and pigment and the individualistic and often erratic behaviors of watercolor paints.

I am inspired by the delicate, simple beauty of the early bud as well as the stubborn, strength of bark on an ancient tree.  Much of my subject matter is from the natural world — plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables — things that I find on hikes in the hills, in my garden in Berkeley or on my kitchen counter.

For me, painting is a practice not a perfect - a constant way to witness and delight in the everyday world around us.
